DTC P2101 on a Volkswagen, Audi, Skoda or SEAT means the engine computer told the throttle motor to move the throttle plate, the round flap that lets air into the engine, and the plate did not end up where it was told to go. The full name is “Throttle Actuator Control Motor Circuit Range/Performance”, and on a six-digit scanner it shows as P210100. On Volkswagen Group cars it usually comes with the EPC light and limp mode, where the car cuts its own power to protect the engine, which is why it feels worse than it is.
You can usually drive gently to get home or to a garage. It is almost never the engine computer (the ECU), and in most cases it does not need a new throttle body. The common fixes are a throttle body clean, a furred-up plug, or a throttle adaptation that was never run, and two of those cost almost nothing. A worn throttle body, the worst case, is a fitted job in the low hundreds at an independent garage.

What DTC P2101 Means on a Volkswagen (and Why the EPC Light Comes With It)
Your car has no cable between the pedal and the engine. Two sensors on the pedal tell the engine computer how far you have pressed it. The computer then drives a small electric motor inside the throttle body, and the motor turns the throttle plate to let air in. Two more sensors on the throttle body measure how far the plate is open and report it back to the computer, so it can check that the plate went where it was sent.
Volkswagen calls this assembly the throttle valve control unit, J338. Inside it are the throttle drive motor, G186, and the two angle sensors, G187 and G188. You will see those names in VCDS and OBDeleven.
P2101 is set when the computer is driving the motor and the plate still does not reach, or hold, the angle it asked for. That is what “range/performance” means. The wires are fine and the motor is getting the signal. Something is stopping the plate from doing what it was told. On a VAG car the engine computer reacts by turning on the EPC light (electronic power control) and cutting power to a safe level. That is limp mode. The engine warning light usually comes on as well.
This matters for what you test first. P2101 is not a “wire is cut” code. It is a “the plate isn’t following orders” code, and the reasons for that are physical far more often than electrical.
Can You Drive With P2101?
Usually yes, gently and not far. Limp mode keeps the engine running but limits throttle response and often holds the revs down. The car will feel flat, slow to get moving, and may idle high or low. That is enough to get home or to a garage on normal roads. Switching the ignition off and on usually restores full power until the fault trips again; a good restart is a pause, not a fix.
Do not drive it on a motorway or try to overtake. If the engine will not respond to the pedal at all, or the idle is rising and falling on its own, stop and have it towed. And do not keep driving on it for weeks. A throttle plate that is sticking can stick further, and limp mode will not always save you at the moment you need power.
Symptoms of P2101 Fault Code
- EPC light on, usually with the engine warning light
- Limp mode: flat throttle response, slow to get moving, no power for overtaking
- Idle higher or lower than normal, or rising and falling on its own
- On some cars the code sets with no symptom at all after a battery change; the adaptation is lost and the computer flags it on the next start

P2101 rarely arrives alone on a VAG car. The codes next to it narrow the cause down before you touch anything.

Write all of them down before you clear anything. A garage will ask, and the combination is half the diagnosis.
Not Sure It’s P2101? P2100 and P2102 Look Similar
All three codes share the same throttle body and the same plug, but they are different faults. P2100 means the computer cannot see the motor at all, an open circuit, and it’s a wiring test first. P2102 means a motor wire is touching ground, usually a wire rubbed through in the bundle. P2101, this page, means the motor is being driven and the plate isn’t following. On a six-digit scanner the same three codes read P210000, P210100 and P210200, and some tools space them as P2101 00; the extra digits are the longer format VAG tools use, not a different fault. If your scanner shows P2100 or P2102, the checks below won’t find your fault; both are electrical. Start with the wiring tests in the P2100 guide, they cover both codes.
One more mix-up worth clearing: some code-lookup sites list P2101 on a Volkswagen as a seat position sensor fault. That’s a different code table, used by the seat module, not the engine. How to Diagnose P2101 With Live Data: Throttle Body, Wiring or Adaptation
You need a scanner that shows live data. A cheap Bluetooth adapter with an app like Car Scanner shows the generic throttle values; a VAG tool like VCDS or OBDeleven shows the computer’s own values with the VAG names on them.
Step 1. Compare the angle the computer asked for with the angle the plate reached. With the ignition on and the engine off, press the pedal slowly from nothing to the floor and watch the two throttle angle values. On a healthy throttle body the plate’s angle follows the requested angle smoothly, with no jumps, no lag and no places where nothing happens. Typical values are a few percent at idle, rising to well over 80 percent with the pedal down. If the plate’s angle lags behind, stops short, jumps, or keeps rising and falling on its own, the plate is not moving freely. That is carbon, a damaged plate, or a weak motor.
Step 2. Watch the two angle sensors. In VCDS or OBDeleven you can see the two throttle angle sensors separately. As you press the pedal, one reading goes up and the other goes down. Both should change smoothly. A sensor that flickers, drops out or sits at one end of its range is a sensor fault or a connector fault, and it explains a P0121, P0221 or P2135 next to your P2101.
Step 3. Check the connector and the motor. Turn the ignition off, unplug the throttle body connector and look at the pins. Green or white furring on the pins, a pin pushed out of place, or water inside the plug are common on cars that have been through a car wash or had a pressure washer near the engine. With a multimeter you can also test the motor itself.

The pin numbers differ between throttle bodies, so check the wiring map for your engine code (the three-letter code on the sticker in the boot or under the bonnet) before you test. On many six-pin VAG throttle bodies the motor is on two of the outer pins and the 5-volt feed on two of the inner ones, but do not guess; a wrong pin gives you a wrong answer.
What the Results Mean
Smooth angles, good connector, motor tests fine, and the code still returns: the adaptation is lost, see the fix section. Angles that lag or step: clean the throttle body first, replace it second. A sensor that misbehaves: the throttle body is the fix, because the sensors are built into it. A bad pin or corroded plug: repair the connector, then adapt.
What Causes P2101 on VAG Engines, Ranked
In rough order of how often they turn up on Volkswagen Group cars:
- Carbon at the edge of the throttle plate. Oil vapour from the engine’s breather pipe bakes onto the plate and the tube it sits in. The motor works harder and harder to move the plate through the build-up until it cannot land it where the computer asks. The most common cause and the cheapest fix.
- A worn throttle body. The motor, gears and closing spring wear with mileage: the plate moves slowly, or goes past where it should stop. Cleaning helps for a while, then the code comes back.
- A lost throttle adaptation. Battery disconnected, throttle body cleaned or replaced, ECU reset: after any of these the computer forgets where fully open and fully closed are, and P2101 can appear with no physical fault at all. The cause behind most “I cleaned it and the code came back” stories.
- A connector or wiring fault. Corroded pins, a loose plug, or a wiring bundle rubbed through where it runs near the engine. Cheap to fix, easy to miss.
- A weak battery or a bad earth. Low voltage makes the motor slow, and the computer reads slow as faulty. Battery old, or the car struggling to start? Sort that first.
Is It Ever the ECU?
Almost never. Two of the pages that rank for this code sell replacement engine computers. Do not replace an ECU for P2101 until a garage has proven the throttle body, the wiring and the adaptation are all good. Now go to the fix section and start at step 1.
How to Fix DTC P2101 on a Volkswagen, Audi or Skoda
Do these in order, cheapest first. Whatever you do, finish with clearing the code and running the adaptation. That last part is where most people go wrong.
Step 1: Clean the Throttle Body
Remove the air pipe that feeds the throttle body, or unbolt the throttle body if you cannot reach the back of the plate. Wipe both sides of the plate and the tube it sits in with throttle body cleaner on a rag, especially the edge where the plate seals. Do not spray into a fitted throttle body, and do not push the plate open by hand with the ignition on. Let it dry, refit it. About an hour.
Step 2: Check the Connector
Unplug it, look for green or white furring on the pins, a pin pushed out of place, or water. Clean with electrical contact cleaner spray, straighten the pin, and make sure the plug clicks fully in when you refit it.
Step 3: Clear the Codes and Run the Throttle Adaptation
This is the step people skip, and it is why the code comes back. In a VAG tool, open the engine module and run the throttle valve adaptation: the Basic Settings menu in VCDS, or the adaptation function in OBDeleven. Conditions: ignition on, engine off, foot off the pedal, no codes stored, healthy battery. It takes about a minute.
No VAG Tool? The 30-Second Ignition Relearn
Switch the ignition on, wait about thirty seconds without starting, switch off, then start normally. Many VAG engine computers relearn the plate this way. If the code returns, you need the tool.
A generic OBD2 adapter clears codes but cannot run the adaptation. For VAG cars the OBDeleven 3 does it from your phone; on my Skoda Rapid the engine module offered basic settings and adaptations on the free plan. For reading codes and live data only, the Vgate iCar Pro is the cheaper tool.
Step 4: If the Code Comes Back, Replace the Throttle Body
The motor, gears or angle sensors are worn, and cleaning cannot fix wear. Buy the part for your exact engine code; the number is stamped on the old unit. Fit it, clear the codes, run the adaptation again. A new throttle body without an adaptation throws the same fault. If a new throttle body and an adaptation still don’t cure it, check the MAP sensor, the small sensor that reads air pressure in the intake, before blaming wiring; a soot-fouled MAP has kept this code alive on more than one car.

If the code comes back after a new throttle body and an adaptation, the fault is somewhere else, usually in the wiring or an earth connection. That is garage territory: an oscilloscope, a tool that shows a flickering signal a normal multimeter would miss, will find it much faster than you can at home.
Which Engines and Models Get P2101 Most
The code turns up across the Volkswagen Group, but it clusters on the direct-injection petrol engines, which spray fuel straight into the cylinder and are known for carbon building up on the plate.

For example, the 2.0 TFSI in the Mk5 Golf GTI and the A3 uses a throttle body in the 06F 133 062 family. Check the number stamped on yours before ordering; the same engine code can use more than one version.

Euro prices are close to the UK column. Non-dealer throttle bodies are cheaper than the dealer part everywhere.
Two things to insist on when you pay someone. First, that they run the adaptation after any work on the throttle body, and that it shows on the invoice. Second, that they show you the live data or the code combination before they quote a new throttle body. A quote with no diagnosis behind it is a guess.
